New Skills Code Form

"Many false conceptions are held concerning the nature of tedium.  In general it is thought that the interestingness and novelty of the time-content are what "make the time pass"; that is to say, shorten it; whereas monotony and emptiness check and restrain its flow.  Vacuity, monotony, have, indeed the property of lingering out the moment and the hour and of making them tiresome.  But they are capable of contracting and dissipating the larger, the very large conversely, a full and interesting content can put wings to the hour and the day; yet it will lend to the general passage of time a weightiness, a breadth and solidity which cause the eventful years to flow far more slowly than these poor, bare, empty ones over which the wind passes and they are gone.  Thus what we call tedium is rather an abnormal shortening of the time consequent upon monotony.  Great spaces of time passed in unbroken uniformity tend to shrink together in a way to make the heart stop beating for fear; when one day is like all the others, then they are all like one; complete uniformity would make the longest life seem short, and as though it had stolen away from us unawares."

As such is life.

My winter was spent in very much a seeming moment of monotony.   Now I've looked up, and here's spring, and back to WORK!   It's pretty much like I never left.   As though I hadn't spent five months alone in a cabin.   Good thing I have this blog to reference!:)

Events to break the tedium...

New ski trails...

This wonderful trail-scape was at the end of Antares this WHOLE time, however I never explored it as at first, I thought it was someone's property, and then later in the winter, it was just too dang dark to see anything anymore.   I guess this is the best time of year to have found it anyway:)

Hadley is just the feline glue I needed to bond Ernesto to me!   Well, at least he's more comfortable in the cabin anyway, and comes down from the loft even while I'm downstairs... during the DAY even...

Hadley is pretty much Ernesto Whisperer...

And also Rude Sourdough Eater...

I also filled some time with Merlin in Fairbanks.   I managed to play the game till inoperativeness... whoops...

My puzzle is finished!   NOW you can see what it is for real...

The best part of this puzzle was the makers' name...

The SunsOut! mama!   Let's stay inside and Puzzle time!!!

AND... the real moose was in MY YARD!   Yes, for the first time since I moved in to this cabin over five months ago, a moose has graced it with his presence!   Hadley spotted him about 50 yards through the trees to the north of the cabin.    The neighborhood dogs started barking at the moose a few seconds after I noticed it, and it high stepped away through the trees and deep snow.  However, the next morning as I began making my way to the outhouse for my morning constitution, I noticed that a moose had made that very journey in the night...

Fingers crossed a mother moose will find my yard a suitable birthing spot!   Probably not with those dern barking dogs... sigh.

"The days lengthen in the winter-time, and when the longest comes, the twenty-first of June, the beginning of summer, they begin to go downhill  again, towards winter.  You call that 'of course'; but if one once loses hold of the fact that it is of course, it is quite frightening, you feel like hanging on to something.  It seems like a practical joke - that spring begins at the beginning of winter, and autumn at the beginning of summer.   You feel you're being fooled, led about in a circle, with your eye fixed on something that turns out to be a moving point.  A moving point in a circle.  For the circle consists of nothing but such transitional points without any extent whatever; the curvature is incommensurable, there is no duration of motion, and eternity turns out to be not 'straight ahead' but 'merry-go-round'!"

Made the Cut, Got Me Some Lynx Butt

What's between Anchorage and Fairbanks?   Denali National Park!

The Park Road is officially open! (until they close it for rough weather in a couple of days:)

Today was overcast and windy and cold, but I just couldn't resist doing some snowshoeing in the park.   The first 13 miles of the Park Road were just as I remembered them, except a little more wintery...

I parked my car at the Mountain Vista trailhead and headed out into the wilderness...

I figured with all the wind and snow approaching, I probably wouldn't see any animals out in the wilds.   I was right.   It was really amazing though just being alone out in the park, with the cold wind blowing snow into cyclones and hearing the hollow crunching sound of walking out on four feet of snow with a frozen layer on top.   I find it hard to believe this same landscape will be a tundra of greens and browns with tiny wildflowers and insects buzzing about in just a matter of months!

Though I didn't see any animals on my trek, I did have a wonderful sighting on the drive out.   I saw a fairly large animal cross the road about 400 feet ahead.   At first I thought, it's either a sled dog or maybe if I'm lucky, a wolf. Then a second animal crossed the road after the first, and I noticed it had no tail... a LYNX!   While driving ahead, I rolled down the passenger side window to hopefully get an unobstructed picture of the big cats.   To my surprise one of the cats was just sitting on a snow pile RIGHT on the side of the road, staring at me.   I fumbled to get my camera on, but of course by the time I got it going, the lynx was traveling on.   Got some cute lynx butt shots though...

They are truly mystical creatures!   I love them almost as much as my little lynx at home:)   She's been enjoying the new toy I made for her from an empty vitamin bottle filled with beans and catnip with a knit covering... have I mentioned lately how glad I am Hadley appreciates my frugality?

Got my Nenana Ice Classic entries all entered and my fingers are officially crossed!   When you and your boyfriend breakup, it's sad... when the Nenana breaks up it's just good fun...

Dweller on the Threshold

Welcome to the vernal equinox!  We are now officially halfway between winter and summer... or, um, spring as most people call it.   Like, wow.

March has brought some pretty interesting celestial phenomenons to be sure.  Mostly Aurora:)   The last solar flare event brought some truly AMAZING northern light shows for many days.   Here are some pictures from the last night of the event...

There is something so awesome and Alaskan feeling about sitting outside in the snow, watching the Aurora dance in the sky behind silhouetted spruce trees, while sled dogs howl in the distance.   All I needed was for a moose to walk by!   Do moose enjoy the northern lights I wonder?

I had recently noticed two very bright stars in the sky, that weren't in the sky last month.   Maizura informed me that they were Jupiter and Venus.   I was intrigued, so I looked it up, and indeed, this is an unusual event!

Venus-Jupiter Conjunction 2012!

There's a whole bunch of science stuff about "ecliptics" and "evening elongation" that I don't quite understand, but, suffice to say, it's pretty cool and is only occurring during March.   Apparently you can see Mars in the eastern sky, but my view is obstructed by mountains and trees I think.   Or maybe just clouds?   I'll keep checking!

The plows have been going by and getting up the packs of snow/ice that have built up on the roads all winter.   I guess they figure the weather is mostly done with it's wacky winterings.   I know I sure wouldn't want to skid into these "snow" piles!

Another puzzle accomplished!   I had my doubts about this one, as all the pieces laying in the box resembled a Jackson Pollock painting.   Actually, the finished puzzle wasn't much more sensible...

Oh, wait...

Whoops, yes, yes Hadley, you're MUCH cuter than the puzzle...

There it is!

I'm now starting a new one that's not designed in the normal square/rectangle shape.   I have the bottom mostly done so far... know what it's going to be?

And finally, a tale of my misplaced Alaskaness...

A couple of days ago I decided it was time to clean the outside of my windows, as, it's spring right?   I mixed some glass cleaner with water in a bucket, and headed outside with my squeegee.   As soon as the water drips down the window, it freezes, as well, it's still 10° outside.   Geez.   So, I go back inside and heat some water up, pour it in a bucket to toss at the ice on the window.   It was a valid attempt, however most of the water just ended up on the cabin.   Hadley at least has a small area to watch birds out the window...

Lesson learned... 10° may be above 0, however it's still below freezing:)   I guess the windows will have to wait until summer...
